Owsley Stanley, icon of 1960s counterculture, dies at 76

Thursday, March 17, 2011

Owsley Stanley, mass-producer of LSD, the drug underlying much of the culture of the 1960s California hippie era, died Sunday in a car accident in Australia at the age of 76, his family announced on Tuesday.

According to The New York Times, “Mr. Stanley lent the ’60s a great deal of its color — like White Lightning, Monterey Purple and Blue Cheer, the varieties of his LSD that were among the most popular.”

Stanley, a talented, self-taught chemist who was known for the purity of his LSD, supplied the drug to such music groups as the Grateful Dead, the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix, and provided the acid for Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters, whose antics were recorded by Tom Wolfe in the The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The Rolling Stones once called his acid “the best LSD in the world … the genuine Owsley.”

He was also an early sound engineer and designed the high-fidelity sound system for the live rock concerts of the Grateful Dead, known as the “wall of sound”. It was essentially a massive public address system made up of 600 speakers that enabled musicians to mix their sound from the stage and reduce distortion. His recordings of Grateful Dead live performances, some having been commercially released, are valued as a documentary of their early music.

Sam Cutler, formerly the tour manager of the Rolling Stones, said of Stanley: “He was a very sophisticated man, an amalgam of scientist and engineer, chemist and artist.”

I remember the first time I took acid and walked outside, and the cars were kissing the parking meters

Stanley was born in Kentucky and studied engineering briefly at the University of Virginia before dropping out and joining the Air Force. In 1958, he moved to California and worked at a wide variety of jobs, before enrolling at the UC at Berkeley in 1963, at a time when drug use was pervasive. He got his first taste of LSD in April 1964 which transformed him. “I remember the first time I took acid and walked outside, and the cars were kissing the parking meters,” he said in an interview with the Rolling Stone Magazine in 2007.

Deciding to provide his own LSD to ensure its quality, Stanley created his own lab to produce it. According to The Washington Post, “Working at first from a makeshift bathroom laboratory in Berkeley, Mr. Stanley produced at least 1 million doses of LSD between 1965 and 1967.” His LSD was widely distributed. The lab was raided and he spent two years in prison.

Stanley moved to Australia in the 1980s when he become convinced the Northern Hemisphere would be destroyed in the coming of a new ice age. He lived in the Australian bush near Cairns, Queensland.

Severe sandstorm strikes Beijing, China

Sunday, March 21, 2010

A severe sandstorm has struck north-west China over the past few weeks, reaching Beijing on Saturday morning. The sandstorm, which covered homes, streets, and cars in dust, has left the sky a murky yellow. The air quality was rated as level five. Beijing’s Weather Bureau issued a warning for the sandstorm, and advised citizens to stay in their homes until it passes. As much as 1500 micrograms per cubic meter of dust were reported to be airborne.

Beijing has experienced unusually cold weather this year, with temperatures below freezing at night, even after the start of spring. The sandstorm is affecting more than 50 million people, and forecasters do not see signs of it stopping soon. The desertification of the western China and the Mongolian steppes has made the annual spring sandstorm become worse in the recent years, reaching countries such as South Korea and Japan. The sandstorm has turned the rain and snow yellow.

The storm also impacted Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Hebei for a total of 270 million people over an area of 1.8 million square kilometers. It is expected the storm will last until Monday.

Nsw Strata Law And Strata Schemes Management Amendment Act

NSW strata law and Strata schemes management Amendment Act

Strata title was an innovation in real estate which came up to cope with the growing needs of people to buy property in the urban areas. Strata or strata schemes are basically a community of people sharing the same residential area while owning their independent part or portion popularly known as lots. Apart from these lots there are some common areas and common facilities like the driveways, staircase, gymnasium, swimming pool, open areas which doesn t come under any specific lot.

While buying into a strata property an individual automatically becomes a member of the body corporate or the owner s corporation and along with other lot owners he is involved in developing and maintaining the strata scheme. The Conveyance (strata title) Act 1961 brought about this innovative property ownership which helped the people to legally own their lot in multi storey apartments.

This law is an owner friendly legislature which ensures financial security unlike the company share certificate system. In the previous case the residents had the legal rights to stay in the building but the company held the property rights. Moreover the share certificates were vastly different than the property certificates which are now issued to the strata owners.

The NSW strata law has given the property owners a lot of independence and by sharing certain responsibilities they enjoy a different kind of life style. Some of the new legislatures are as follows

Strata schemes can be a hot bed of litigation and disputes if the residents don t agree with each other and refuse to go by the decisions taken by the Executive committee members. This is the reason why a number of strata management companies are coming up to cope with the needs of different strata schemes.

Each strata scheme has its unique features and different set of by laws. The strata managers have in depth knowledge about the different strata schemes and also about the different Govt. rules and regulations affecting strata type properties. They have enough experience and technical know hows regarding the intricate workings of the Govt. rules and regulations and its correct interpretations.

NSW strata laws are regularly amended to provide better strata living and the knowledge about these are extremely important for any kinds of dispute mitigation.

If we take the example of strata management legislation amendment act 2008 we can see how they enhance the operation and management of strata schemes. This amendment affects the following areas

*Caretakers and building managers

*By laws about parking vehicles on common property

*Proxies and power of attorney

*Building disputes

*Disclosure requirements by the executive committee members

NSW strata laws are pro people legislatures which are amended on a regular basis to improve the quality of lives of people staying in strata type houses.

RTÉ’s Eddie Hobbs attracts massive audience

Thursday, August 25, 2005

In Ireland, RTÉ’s new “Rip Off Republic” TV series has attracted a record audience of 667,000 for its second show, making it one of Ireland’s top TV programs. The second show broadcast on Monday 15th August captured 50.5% of all TV viewers in Ireland.

The series which contains four shows broadcast from Dublin City University’s “Helix” centre, aims to expose over pricing and the exploitation of consumers in Ireland. Hosted by financial advisor Eddie Hobbs, the show has attracted huge media commentry, particularly as it has attracted the attention of the governments main party, Fianna Fail.

The main argument against the show has been that it generalises issues and makes exaggerated claims – for example it claimed that restaurants make a 300%+ profit on a typical bottle of wine, leading the viewer to believe that all businesses are making such a profit. This claim has since come under attack by restaurant owners nationwide. Other arguments against the show have stated that while inflation is less than 3%, wage growth is over 6% meaning people are still better off.

The third show will be broadcast on 29th August at 9.30pm on RTÉ One. It will focus on the transport sector in Ireland.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Does Your Child Have Touch Sensitivity?

Does it disturb your child when you stroke her face? Does your son need to have all the labels removed from his clothing before he will wear them? Does your child refuse to wear wool because it scratches him? Do you have to battle with your daughter in order to brush her hair?

It could be that your child has a sensory motor integration deficit known as tactile defensiveness or touch sensitivity.

What is Touch Sensitivity?

The sense of touch is essential for normal social and emotional development. It is this system that allows us to make the deepest connections with others. It is through touch that the mother and child bond to each other. We connect most closely with our spouses through touch.

Touch also serves a protective function. It is through tactile discomfort or pain that we realize that things like fire are dangerous. Painful or unpleasant touch experiences tell us to prepare for a physical threat that might require a need to run away or retaliate.

In some people this tactile sensory system is not functioning properly. These people experience pain or distress from touch sensations that other people find non-threatening or even pleasant. These people have sensory integration disorder known as tactile defensiveness or touch sensitivity.

Children with touch sensitivity are often in the state of “red alert”. These children are threatened by sensations that others would see as meaningless. Children with touch sensitivity also experience tactile sensations differently than others. A sensation that we would experience as soft may be painful to them. The result is that often their behavior is affected. Casual contact can cause what others view as extreme and inappropriate reactions. These children may whine cling lash out or run away as a result of normal things in their environment.

Sensory motor integration deficits need not affect a child’s learning ability, but the resulting reaction often does. A child with touch sensitivity is constantly on the defense. He can be emotionally insecure and extremely distractible. This is one of the ways that tactile defensiveness differs from ADD ADHD. ADHD children have difficulty sustaining attention, but they are not more easily distracted than other children. Small stimuli that would not affect an ADHD child who is engaged in an activity, may cause disturb a touch sensitive child.

To give you an idea of how these children experience the world, imagine the feeling you have when someone scrapes his nails along a blackboard, or the feeling you have when you cut your nails too short. This is how a touch sensitive child might experience a warm caress. There is a difference, however. When you cut your nails too short, it bothers you for a while, but the discomfort goes away. If a child is touch sensitive, the discomfort never goes away.

The child may not be able to wear his dress pants because the feel of wool is too uncomfortable to bear. He may not be able to concentrate in school because he is enduring the hardness of the chair or the rush of air blowing on him from the ventilation system. He may be quick to lash out when another child bumps him, because of the perceived attack by the other child. He may be unable to make friends because of the fear of being bumped prevents him from interacting in a normal fashion.

Adults with a sensory integration disorder may have problems in their relationships with their spouses. Normal daily contact may disturb them, and they may avoid physical contact with their spouses even when such contact is appropriate. This desire not to be touched can have a seriously negative impact on a marriage.

What You Might See

Here are some of the things that may indicate that your child is touch sensitive. Your child may be touch sensitive if he:

Reacts strongly to sensations that most people don’t notice.

Tries to avoid tactile experiences.

Is easily distracted because things are touching him.

Insists on having certain textures of clothing.

Makes you cut all the tags and labels out of his clothing.

Won’t eat certain foods because of their texture.

Craves certain sensations the he finds calming, like rocking or firm pressure.

Fights irrationally when you are combing or shampooing his hair, cutting his fingernails, or brushing his teeth.

In adults and children with sensory motor integration deficits the palms of the hands, soles of feet, mouth and tongue are usually most sensitive areas.

Coexisting Disorders

Touch sensitivity is a sensory integration problem. Although this disorder can exist by itself, more often it is part of a constellation of other problems that children have. Children with touch sensitivity often have the following other disorders:

Motor coordination problems

Bed-wetting

Speech and language delays

Hand-eye coordination difficulties

Motor planning difficulties

Allergies

Frequent ear infections

Poor eating habits

Problems with digestion & elimination

Sleep irregularities

High anxiety and emotional insecurity

In addition there are a number of medical disorders that commonly have touch sensitivity as a component. These include: Asperger’s Syndrome

Autism

ADHD

Bipolar Disorder

Down Syndrome

Dyslexia Fetal alcohol syndrome

Fragile X

Learning Disabilities

Obsessive compulsive disorder

Pervasive developmental delay

Selective mutism

Causes

Like so many other disorders of the brain and complex neurological function, we do not know why children and adults have sensory integration disorders. In medicine, when we don’t know the cause of something we like to say that the cause is idiopathic. This is a term which is a term derived from Greek or Latin or some other dead language, which means “we don’t know.”

However as scientists, not knowing something makes us very uncomfortable. Therefore there a number of theories on what causes disturbances in sensory processing. There are at least five competing hypotheses. The most recent research suggests that the abnormality may lie in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that modulates sensory motor activity. There might be something to these theories. However, based upon the review of current literature it seems to me clearly, that the cause of touch sensitivity is idiopathic.

What Should You Do Next?

Touch sensitivity is a sensory motor integration deficit. The goal of treatment is to repair the sensory processing disorder by giving the child a means to develop his or her sensory integration. The goal of therapy is to normalize sensory integration and motor planning by improving the way the nervous system registers and interprets tactile information.

Treatment of touch sensitivity is usually done under the auspices of an occupational therapist. If you feel that your child may have touch sensitivity you should first try to confirm the diagnosis by going to someone who is trained in diagnosing sensory integration problems. You should first consult your pediatrician with your concern and try to get a referral to a Pediatric Occupational Therapy Service for diagnosis and treatment. They will manage your child’s treatment plan and teach you what you can do at home to help your child.

Conclusion

Touch sensitivity is one of a number of sensory motor integration deficits that affect children. It often accompanies other disorders such as ADHD, Bipolar disorder, and other developmental childhood disorders.

I have not seen any statistics, but it seems that sensory integration disorders are fairly common. This condition can be severely handicapping. However, it is possible to treat. If you feel that your child may have this condition, it is definitely in your child’s best interest to have a thorough evaluation by an Occupational therapist trained in sensory integration and motor planning.

Chinese fishing boat hijacked off coast of Cameroon

Sunday, March 14, 2010

The Chinese embassy in Cameroon said earlier that a fishing boat was hijacked off the coast of Cameroon. Seven Chinese fishermen were kidnapped in the incident, which happened on Friday, and a group called the “Africa Marine Commando” claimed responsibility, according to an embassy official.

“We are working together with the Cameroon authorities on ways and means of seeking their release,” the official said. The ship was hijacked “in international waters off Bakassi“, a peninsula in southwestern Cameroon.

The Chinese news agency Xinhua quoted the Chinese embassy as saying that the kidnapped fishermen were being fed, and their lives were not in danger.

The Agence France-Presse news agency quotes a source close to the investigation of the incident as saying that authorities from both Cameroon and China “are working jointly to secure their release,” and that the fishermen were on a trawler when they were kidnapped.

KKE: Interview with the Greek Communist Party

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Wikinews reporter Iain Macdonald has performed an interview with Dr Isabella Margara, a London-based member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). In the interview Margara sets out the communist response to current events in Greece as well as discussing the viability of a communist economy for the nation. She also hit back at Petros Tzomakas, a member of another Greek far-left party which criticised KKE in a previous interview.

The interview comes amid tensions in cash-strapped Greece, where the government is introducing controversial austerity measures to try to ease the nation’s debt-problem. An international rescue package has been prepared by European Union member states and the International Monetary Fund – should Greece require a bailout; protests have been held against government attempts to manage the economic situation.

Using Body Language Subliminal To Control Your Non Verbal Communication Skills

Using Body Language Subliminal to Control Your Non-Verbal Communication Skills

by

Nelson Berry

Do you think you consciously hold the key to all your thoughts, expressions, mannerisms, and habits? The conscious mind is not that powerful. It is the subconscious that actually controls all these.

Controlling Your Body Language Do you find yourself unable to overcome bad habits or negative mannerisms? Do you find yourself spitting out expressions you don’t consciously mean to say? Do you find yourself revealing more than you should through your body movements? If so, that means your subconscious is betraying you because you are clearly not in control of it. But do you know that there is a way for you to control your subconscious? This way, you can maintain consistency in all your thoughts, actions, habits, mannerisms, expressions, and behavior. You can control your words and body movements. You can send the right messages through both verbal language and body language in a consistent manner. So how can you control your subconscious to control all communication points in your system, including your body language? All you need are subliminal messages. These are messages that pass right under the nose of your conscious mind to go straight to the subconscious. This means the conscious mind don’t get the chance to filter them or to block them. Once absorbed by the subconscious, these messages can change the way you think, which also changes the way you act, move, and behave. Just as you can quit smoking by sending a subliminal message to your subconscious that you are free from the smoking habit because it is not healthy for you, you can also put a stop to uncontrolled expressions and body language that give you away. This way, you can have full control over yourself. How to Deliver Subliminal Messages So how exactly can you embed subliminal messages into your subconscious mind? These messages get absorbed the easiest when the conscious mind is relaxed. Thus, you can try techniques that first put the conscious mind in a relaxed state such as: — Hypnotherapy — Meditation However, if you are short on time and want to do this the easier way, you can invest in affordable but powerful subliminal products, such as subliminal videos and MP3 files, which can easily be downloaded online. Just by watching the videos or listening to the audio files, your mind will become filled with the positive subliminal messages you want to deliver. It’s that effortless. Each video or audio file takes just a few minutes of your time. It’s so easy you can even do it on your lunch time or before bed. Reading Other People’s Body Language – Insights from the Subliminal Mind The concept of the subliminal mind can also help you read through other people’s real body language. Now that you know about the limitations of the conscious mind, you also know that there are some aspects in other people’s personalities that they themselves cannot control. This includes body language and mannerisms, which betray their real thoughts or intentions. Knowing this, you can now pay close attention to these uncontrolled areas of a person’s behavior to get clues about the other person’s motives, thoughts, and beliefs. Nelson Berry
