The Quest For A Quality Nursing Home

Submitted by: R.L. Fielding

Choosing a long-term health care or assisted living facility that is right for you and your family is a big decision and a big commitment; comparable to buying a house. Though the conclusion to move to or help your loved one transition to a Lifecare community is often decided far in advance, making the actual choice is often a bigger decision than anyone bargains for.

The ultimate goal is to be comfortable, safe, happy, and secure, and because it is difficult to determine which long-term health care facilities have the residents best interests at heart, it is often difficult to distinguish a really great home from one that is just good.

To aid in the decision-making, here are some questions to help identify facilities truly dedicated to health care support and service excellence and to creating a warm, inviting community for you or your loved one:

Facility and Staff Credentials

o Find out about the licensing requirements in your state for various types of facilities and then make sure the facilities on your list are licensed and that their licenses are visible.

o Ask about the credentials of the staff. Does the nursing facility offer training? Are there staff dedicated to the different types of dementia? How many licensed RNs are on staff at all times?

Care and Service

o Read the Resident’s Bill of Rights. Copies should be made available for you. If you choose a facility, keep a copy of the Bill of Rights on hand.

o Some life care centers have developed a “neighborhood” concept so residents can live and socialize with people who have similar needs and experiences. Are residents with dementia grouped together in one wing or are they spread out?

o Is there a Social Services Worker on staff in the facility? These workers help to make the transition easier for your loved one, as well as help to make their stay comfortable.

o What do the meals consist of? Can a special diet be implemented? What steps are taken to ensure the proper foods are given to the right residents?

o Look at the activity noise level and cleanliness of the facility. Is it clean? Is there a healthy amount of background noise?

Safety and Accessibility

o Are safety and accessibility top priorities for the facility?

o What precautionary steps are in place for emergencies?

o Are there smoke detectors, how many, are they all working?

o How often do they have the fire extinguishers checked and if they know where they are located?

o Are safety procedures adequate? Are stairways and exits clearly marked?

o Is it easy to move from one place to another?

o Are halls and toilets wide enough for wheelchairs?

o Are there any floor hazards like being too slippery or having a thick carpet?

o Are the doors operated electronically?

o Is there an emphasis on allowing residents to be as independent as they can be?

o Are there bathing devices available? Are handle rails provided in the bathing area?

o Are there multiple dining rooms and amenities to keep walking distances short?

Amenities and Comfort

o Does the facility have a community feel?

o Are the residents happy, alert, groomed, clean, well-fed, and healthy? Are the interactions between co-workers and between workers and residents caring, friendly, and supportive? Does the staff know the residents by name?

o What services does the facility provide?

o A facility dedicated to resident comfort and service should provide laundry facilities on each floor, flat linen service, monthly housekeeping, maintenance and scheduled transportation.

o Other amenities may include a hair salon, bank, and gift shop.

o Each room should have individually controlled heat and air conditioning with an emergency response system.

Recreation

o What types of activities are provided?

o How are they supervised? How often are they held?

o Are there social, recreational, spiritual, fitness and wellness programs available?

o What kinds of exercise regimes are included?

o Do they provide exercise equipment that is appropriate and easy-to-use?

o Is there a fitness instructor on staff?

o What is offered for social and solo activities?

o Is there a computer room, meditation room, library, craft room, game room or wood shop?

o Are there Chaplain Services including visitation, Bible study and worship?

o Are there nature areas, gardens and footpaths?

Health Care Services

o Are different levels of care, from assisted living to health care to short term rehabilitation programs, available? Is there a focus on needs assessment to determine the appropriate level of care for each resident?

o Is there sufficient nursing and personal care, including medication management?

o Are in-home health services available?

o Are nurses always close at hand?

o If the facility offers short term rehabilitation programs, is there a private wing with private room and dining area.

o Does the facility offer care for residents with dementia? What kinds of programs are available for these residents?

o Are personal care plans developed by an inter-disciplinary team?

Financial

o Is there a guaranteed refundable entrance fee?

o Do the assisted living and health care services come at no additional monthly fee?

o To what degree does the life care center manage the residents finances?

o Are Medicare and Medicaid plans accepted?

Dedication to Improvements

o Are there programs in place to study processes, re-evaluate services and ask residents and families what might be done better?

o How often are the findings from these programs implemented into changes for the staff, residents, and administration?

o Is the center dedicated to the continuous training of its staff? How is training implemented? And how often?

o Does the dedication to improvements carry over into every facet of the facility? For instance, at Keswick Pines, a life care center in Ocean County, New Jersey, each of the following has been implemented:

o The nursing staff is exploring best practices in the field that might be good to introduce to the community

o Health Care Aides are creating a personal care manual called Gentle Touch that includes tips on dealing with difficult or frail residents.

o The housekeeping department created a satisfaction survey tool.

o The Food Service Department has already undergone two independent audits for safety/sanitation and overall food quality and has earned exceptional marks.

o And the CEO is creating a task force of hourly workers to discuss what more can be done to fulfill the 7 AAHSA objectives.

Finding the right Lifecare community can be a fulfilling and truly rewarding experience. And going in asking the right questions can mean the difference between good and excellent care for you and your loved ones.

Two-millenia-old Chinese guard gets unwanted new recruit

Friday, September 22, 2006

Legendary Emperor Qin Shi Huang of China had one more terracotta warrior guarding his tomb, recently. Pablo Wendel, an art student from Germany, disguised himself as one of the clay sculptures surrounding Qinshihuang in his final resting place, now a museum.

Police protecting the northern China museum searched for an extended period of time, as Wendel stood silently, among several thousand sculptures. When police found the 26-year-old performance artist, who later told them he was fascinated by the monumental display, they carried him away “as if he were a log.”

China was united by Emperor Qin Shi Huang over 2,200 years ago. The tomb in Xian, once the capital of China, is open to the public as a museum.

Eurozone approves Greece bailout

Monday, May 3, 2010

The European Union and International Monetary Fund (IMF) have agreed to provide the ailing Greek economy with 110 billion euros (US$146 billion) worth of loans over three years. Finance ministers from the sixteen countries that use the euro – known as the eurozone – approved the plan yesterday.

According to the plan, the EU is to provide 80 billion euros of the loans, and the IMF the other 30 billion; it is aimed at preventing Greece from defaulting on debt.

Before being fully implemented, however, the proposal must be individually approved by all fifteen other countries in the eurozone. According to Luxembourgish prime minister Jean-Claude Junker, up to 30 billion euros would be given to Greece in the first year.

German chancellor Angela Merkel commented on the proposal yesterday, saying: “The programmme is without alternative to safeguard the stability of the euro.”

The Greek government yesterday predicted that the country’s gross domestic product would drop by four percent this year; it also forecast the national debt, currently at 115% of GDP, will increase to 149% in 2013, before going down.

Britney Spears fired by management company

Tuesday, September 18, 2007File:Britney-Spears082.jpg

The Firm, a company which pop singer Britney Spears hired to manage her career just over one month ago, no longer wishes to manage Spears, and has terminated the services they were providing her to promote her new record.

“We have terminated our professional relationship with Britney Spears. We believe she is enormously talented, but current circumstances have prevented us from properly doing our job,” said the company in a statement to the media. Jeff Kwatinetz was the manager for Spears. It is not yet known what circumstances caused the company to sever their ties with Spears.

Spears is releasing a new album, scheduled to be put on shelves in November, and her record label, Jive Records, has stated that the recent incident will not delay the release of her record.

“The label does not comment on artist/management relations. We’re gearing up for a Nov. 13 album release date,” said the record label in a statement to the media.

Race to save Chilean miners trapped underground from spiralling into depression continues

Thursday, September 2, 2010

It has emerged that the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground after the mine they were working in collapsed could be brought to the surface in a shorter time than was initially feared. While officials publicly announced that the men would not be brought to the surface until Christmas, sources inside technical meetings have revealed that they could in fact be on the surface by early November. The news comes as families were allowed to speak by radio-telephone to their trapped loved ones on Sunday. Over the weekend, video images filmed by the miners emerged showing the miners playing dominoes at a table and singing the Chilean national anthem. The miners also used the camera to send video messages to their families on the surface, saying that they regularly broke into tears, but were feeling better having received food and water.

The grainy nightvision images, filmed on a high definition camcorder that was sent down a small shaft to the mine, show the men in good spirits, chanting “long live Chile, and long live the miners.” They are unshaven and stripped to the waist because of the heat underground, and are seen wearing white clinical trousers that have been designed to keep them dry. Giving a guided tour of the area they are occupying, Mario Sepúlveda, one of the miners, explains they have a “little cup to brush our teeth”, and a place where they pray each day. “We have everything organized,” he tells the camera. Gesturing to the table in the center of the room, he says that “we meet here every day. We plan, we have assemblies here every day so that all the decisions we make are based on the thoughts of all 33.” Another unidentified miner asks to rescuers, “get us out of here soon, please.” A thermometer is shown in the video, reading 29.5C (85F).

As the film continues, it becomes evident that the miners have stuck a poster of a topless woman on the wall. The miners appear shy, and one man puts his hand to his face, presumably dazzled by the light mounted on the cameraman’s helmet. One miner sent a message to his family. “Be calm”, he says. “We’re going to get out of here. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your efforts.” Another said that the miners are “sure that there are people here in Chile that are big people, that are powerful people, that are intelligent people, and they have the technology and they will all work together to get us out of here.” Speaking to the camera, one says: “we have had the great fortune that trapped in this mine there are good, professional people. We have electricians, we have mechanics, we have machine operators and we will let you know that while you are working to rescue us on the surface, we are down here ready to help you too.” It has been reported that Mario Gómez, 63, has become the group’s “spiritual leader”, having worked in the mines for over fifty years. He has requested that materials to build a shrine be sent down to the cavern.

Upon seeing the video in a private screening, family members, who are living in a small village of tents at the entrance to the San José copper-gold mine—which they have named Camp Hope—were elated. “He’s skinny, bearded and it was painful to see him with his head hanging down, but I am so happy to see him alive”, said Ruth Contreras, the mother of Carlos Bravo, who is trapped in the mine. The video, of which only a small portion has been released to the public, shows the miners, many of them wearing helmets, cracking jokes and thanking the rescuers for their continued efforts. The supplies are being sent to the men through a small shaft only twelve centimeters wide, and a laboratory has been set up with the purpose of designing collapsible cots and miniature sandwiches, which can be sent down such a narrow space.

CNN reported on Friday that “officials are splitting the men into two shifts so one group sleeps while the other works or has leisure time .. On average, each man has lost 22 pounds (10 kilograms) since they became trapped three weeks ago, and dehydration remains a threat. But a survey of the men indicates that at least nine miners are still too overweight to fit through the proposed rescue shaft. Initially, the miners survived by draining water from a water-cooled piece of equipment. To stay hydrated in the 90-degree mine, each miner must drink eight or nine pints of water per day.”

But while there are jubilant celebrations on the surface that the miners are alive, officials are now nervous that the miners could become depressed, trapped in a dark room the size of a small apartment. Chilean health minister Jaime Mañalich said that, on the video, he saw the telltale signs of depression. “They are more isolated, they don’t want to be on the screen, they are not eating well”, he said. “I would say depression is the correct word.” He said that doctors who had watched the video had observed the men suffering from “severe dermatological problems.” Dr. Rodrigo Figueroa, head of the trauma, stress and disaster unit at the Catholic University in Santiago, Chile, explained that “following the euphoria of being discovered, the normal psychological reaction would be for the men to collapse in a combination of fatigue and stress … People who are trained for emergencies – like these miners – tend to minimize their own needs or to ignore them. When it is time to ask for help, they don’t.” NASA has advised emergency workers that entertaining the miners would be a good idea. They are to be sent a television system complete with taped football matches. Another dilemma facing Mañalich is whether the miners should be permitted to smoke underground. While nicotine gum has been delivered to the miners, sending down cigarettes is a plan that has not been ruled out.

With the news that drilling of the main rescue tunnel was expected to begin on Monday, officials have informed the media that they hope to have the miners out of the mine by Christmas—but sources with access to technical meetings have suggested that the miners could actually be rescued by the first week of November. A news report described the rescue plan—”the main focus is a machine that bores straight down to 688m and creates a chimney-type duct that could be used to haul the miners out one by one in a rescue basket. A second drilling operation will attempt to intercept a mining tunnel at a depth of roughly 350m. The miners would then have to make their way through several miles of dark, muddy tunnels and meet the rescue drill at roughly the halfway point of their current depth of 688m.” Iván Viveros Aranas, a Chilean policeman working at Camp Hope, told reporters that Chile “has shown a unity regardless of religion or social class. You see people arriving here just to volunteer, they have no relation at all to these families.”

But over the weekend, The New York Times reported that the “miners who have astonished the world with their discipline a half-mile underground will have to aid their own escape — clearing 3,000 to 4,000 tons of rock that will fall as the rescue hole is drilled, the engineer in charge of drilling said Sunday … The work will require about a half-dozen men working in shifts 24 hours a day.” Andrés Sougarret, a senior engineer involved in operating the drill said that “the miners are going to have to take out all that material as it falls.”

The families of those trapped were allowed to speak to them by radio-telephone on Sunday—a possibility that brought reassurance both the miners and those on the surface. The Intendant of the Atacama Region, Ximena Matas, said that there had been “moments of great emotion.” She continued to say that the families “listened with great interest and they both felt and realized that the men are well. This has been a very important moment, which no doubt strengthens their [the miners’] morale.” The phone line is thought to be quite temperamental, but it is hoped that soon, those in the mine and those in Camp Hope will be able to talk every day. “To hear his voice was a balm to my heart … He is aware that the rescue is not going to happen today, that it will take some time. He asked us to stay calm as everything is going to be OK … He sounded relaxed and since it was so short I didn’t manage to ask anything. Twenty seconds was nothing”, said said Jessica Cortés, who spoke to her husband Víctor Zamora, who was not even a miner, but a vehicle mechanic. “He went in that day because a vehicle had broken down inside the mine … At first they told us he had been crushed [to death].”

Esteban Rojas sent up a letter from inside the mine, proposing to his long-time partner Jessica Yáñez, 43. While they have officially been married for 25 years, their wedding was a civil service—but Rojas has now promised to have a church ceremony which is customary in Chile. “Please keep praying that we get out of this alive. And when I do get out, we will buy a dress and get married,” the letter read. Yáñez told a newspaper that she thought he was never going to ask her. “We have talked about it before, but he never asked me … He knows that however long it takes, I’ll wait for him, because with him I’ve been through good and bad.”

Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

Monday, June 21, 2010

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.

The Subtle Arts Of Covert Hypnosis

Submitted by: Gregory Frost

Covert hypnosis is commonly known as the art of persuasion or the subtle way to alter another person’s views and beliefs and replacing them with a totally different thought. It has a lot of diverse forms and manifestations when there are times that people use it unconsciously.

It is also known as conversational hypnosis that can be used in different industries. This is usually applied in normal discussions wherein the user aims to get the conversation focused on him, which eventually will end up in positive results.

The subtle art of covert hypnosis is frequently beneficial in the business world. There are just some people who have become experts in the process of negotiations and there are those that excel in implementing marketing strategies. Salesmen must always appear credible in order to be successful in their fields. They may seem talkative at some points but the way they act is just a part of it. They would try to make clients agree with what they want by creating the rapport to close a business deal. Sometimes we look at salespersons as people who need us. It may be true, but when you analyze everything, during the entire process of the sale, you are the one being influenced into believing that you need them to give you the product. This is simply the subtle way of making another person to think the way you do.

Covert hypnosis is of course also used by psychologists for therapeutic treatments for certain conditions like; mental stress, insomnia and phobias. This is used to create a bond with patients by listening with what they have to say and what concerns those most as well as in making sure that the patients clearly identify their beliefs and ideas. Once the patient starts feeling that the therapist is listening and agreeing, they start to build trust, and the treatment will go smoothly.

Covert hypnosis is also used in monologues, which can come in different forms like; advertisements, announcements or speeches. Use of this technique allows the speaker to capture audience attention at once. The way the monologues go from beginning to end should be as effective as the start in order to keep the audiences’ attention from wandering away from the speech. In TV advertisements, companies use voices that are deep and commanding. They do not use comforting voices because they want the viewers to watch and listen and get the message within the few allotted minutes. In most cases this is a very effectively advertising technique.

The subtle art of covert hypnosis is the way to manipulate and persuade, no matter what we call it. People use this technique to control the minds of other people to give in. Salespersons use it to make potential buyers make purchases and maybe return for more. Psychologists use it to make the patients think that they are safe, and it is alright to discuss anything. Speakers need to use this technique to capture and maintain audience attention. It is not a way to deceive but rather just an art of making other people think the way you do.

American baseball star Rodriguez admits to using performance enhancing drugs

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

American Major League Baseball third baseman Alex Rodriguez, a star player for the New York Yankees, admitted in an interview on sports network ESPN that he used performance-enhancing drugs during 2001 through 2003.

“I did take a banned substance, and for that, I’m very sorry,” Rodriguez told ESPN’s Peter Gammons. “When I arrived at Texas in 2001 I felt an enormous amount of pressure to perform.”

I did take a banned substance, and for that, I’m very sorry.

Last week, Sports Illustrated reported that the baseball player, nicknamed ‘A-Rod’, tested positive in 2003 for Primobolan and testosterone, two substances that have been banned by the league.

During the 2003 season, Rodriguez was playing with the Texas Rangers, and was the winner of the American League MVP Award and was American League leader in home runs. According to sources, Rodriguez was one of 104 players named on a list for testing positive before the 2003 season. The list was compiled in an attempt to determine whether the MLB needed to begin conducting random drug testing.

After the initial report Rodriguez was approached by Sports Illustrated while he was training for the upcoming season in a Miami area gym. At that time, Rodriguez told the reporter “You’ll have to talk to the union.” He was also asked for an explanation of his positive test result, to which he commented “I’m not saying anything.” According to a report by ESPN, sources claim that Rodriguez was aware that he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

However, in December 2007 after United States Senator George J. Mitchell‘s Mitchell Report was released accusing such teammates of Rodriguez as Roger Clemens, Jason Giambi and Andy Pettitte of steroid use, Rodriguez appeared on ABC’s 60 Minutes and declined the use of any steroid or performance-enhancing drug. He also commented that he would not need the help of steroids, stating, “I’ve never felt overmatched on the baseball field. I felt that if I did my, my work as I’ve done since I was, you know, a rookie back in Seattle, I didn’t have a problem competing at any level.”

Senator Mitchell stated in a prepared comment yesterday that his report had only named that players that “had received credible evidence of their illegal purchase, possession, or use of performance enhancing substances.” He pointed out that he “did not have access to the results of the 2003 drug testing, and to this day I do not know which players tested positive then.”

The MLB declined to comment directly on the situation due to court orders on the list of names and documents, but did release a statement: “Information and documents relating to the results of the 2003 MLB testing program are both confidential and under seal by court orders. We are prohibited from confirming or denying any allegation about the test results of any particular player by the court orders. Anyone with knowledge of such documents who discloses their contents may be in violation of those court orders.”

I did not have access to the results of the 2003 drug testing, and to this day I do not know which players tested positive then.

Rodriguez has been one of the many prominent American baseball players over the past few years who has been linked to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Other prominent names include both the arguably greatest hitter and pitcher in Major League Baseball history, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. Bonds, the all-time Major League record holder for home runs, was linked to steroid use during the BALCO scandal in 2003, while Clemens was named in the Mitchell report in December of 2007.

The executive vice president for labor relations of Major League Baseball, Rob Manfred, stated that league commissioner Bud Selig was “disturbed” by the linking of steroid use to Rodriguez. Commenting for the league, he said, “Because the survey testing that took place in 2003 was intended to be non-disciplinary and anonymous, we cannot make any comment on the accuracy of this report as it pertains to the player named.”

The report by Sports Illustrated also made the claim that Gene Orza, the COO of the Major League Baseball Players Association informed Rodriguez of a random drug test that occurred in September of 2004, a test that was supposed to remain confidential to all players. The MLBPA denied the accusations, commenting “There was no improper tipping of players in 2004 about the timing of drug tests. In September 2004 MLBPA attorneys met with certain players, but we are not able to confirm or deny the names of any players with whom we met.” When asked in the Sports Illustrated report, Orza declined to comment, stating “I’m not interested in discussing this information with you.”

There was no improper tipping of players in 2004 about the timing of drug tests.

The anonymous testing of players was started in 2003 by the MLB, in order to get a brief estimate of how many players were using performance-enhancing drugs, leading to the beginning of the mandatory, penalty-enforced testing that began in 2004. 1,198 players took the “survey test” in 2003, and the results were later stored in a laboratory in Las Vegas, with codes being used in place of the players names. However, a list of the players actual names that went with the list of codes was kept in a separate office in Long Beach, never intended to ever be together with the codes.

In April 2004, federal agents with search warrants raided the two labs looking for information on the 2003 BALCO scandal test results of 10 players, including Barry Bonds. While searching, they found both the list of names and the codes, including the positive test result of Rodriguez. Following the investigation and raid, the MLBPA informed all 104 players on the list that their positive test data had been sized by the federal agents.

I said in my book Vindicated that he was a known steroid user before 2000. It’s old news. I’ve been saying this forever. You guys are playing catch-up.

Former Major League Baseball star and self-confessed steroid user José Canseco told the media that the news was old, saying “I said in my book Vindicated that he was a known steroid user before 2000. It’s old news. I’ve been saying this forever. You guys are playing catch-up.” In the book, Canseco links Rodriguez to steroids through the claim that he saw him using the drugs. In his first book, Juiced, references to Rodriguez were removed by the publisher of the book because it could not be confirmed that Canseco actually saw Rodriguez taking steroids. According to the publisher, it was only after Canseco passed a lie detector test that information about Rodriguez was allowed into Vindicated.

What do you think the positive test says about steroid use in baseball today? Does the test result affect the way you view Rodriguez’s accomplishments as a player?

Current senior advisor to the Texas Rangers John Hart commented on the situation in an interview with MLB Network. “I think in the climate that we have today, you don’t have much shock anymore. Obviously Alex probably is the best player in baseball. This has always been a special talent and the guy has been putting up Hall of Fame numbers since the day he showed up in the big leagues. I’ve been in the game for almost 40 years and it hurts a little bit, if in fact this is true. It breaks my heart for the game that we have this kind of thing occurring, But at the same time, a lot of people seem to have been caught in this net,” he said.

Since the positive test occurred in 2003 before penalties were instituted, Rodriguez will most likely not be suspended by the MLB as a result of the situation.

Guardian Angels

By Erika Hall

I recently published a blog under my nickname of Muchacha to my account at www.blogit.com about a miraculous survival I had six months ago and someone commented on it that I must have had a Guardian Angel, and that they deserved a medal!

Well this set me thinking because how else did I survive? I mean, there I was, not exactly a nubile young thing, falling at least 50 metres down a ravine at gone midnight on a very cold January night and I ended up with horrendous cuts and bruises, sprains, a dislocation, frozen kidneys and a partially collapsed lung . but not a single bone was actually broken! I was in Intensive Care in the Hospital for 5 days and nights and well, I SURVIVED. Indeed, more than that, I did not end up in a wheel chair, or comatose state – my brain was not damaged, despite the fact that I was unconscious for 15 hours and apart from some very interesting scars plus the occasional backache, I feel no different to what I did before the accident now like I said, just six months on!

Friends tell me there has to be a reason why I survived . and I accept that too (I will address that in another article!) but as to HOW ???? I remember falling – I remember hitting the rocks and hurtling over and over – and then I remember coming to a stop with a thud. That was when I said to myself I had to wait until it was daylight before I could even think of clambering out of the situation and so I passed out.

Some six years ago the only person who ever really understood me passed away. She was my mother. I still miss her absolutely. Then just seven months before my drama, her nearest sister and my favourite aunty joined her. Could they have saved me? I mean, when people talk of Guardian Angels one assumes they are some mystical figure from ancient times but why cant it be someone who loved you utterly? Someone you loved utterly – who although they are now dead, ARE capable of still guiding and saving you in a crisis?

I know, I know, this is where Faith, Religion and Belief come in so all right, if one believed in God then I suppose you would be thanking Him forever for your survival; and I dont deny that possibility – its just that, somehow, I like to think that MY Guardian Angel is still my little mum, aided and abetted by her sister.

What do you think?
