How Much Of The Bible Can A Person Not Believe And Still Be Okay?

Assuming there is a problem between man and God, what is the stuff that corrects the problem? Is it good works? Is it obedience to various rituals? Is it by confessing and repenting of sins?We maintain that a man is justified (made right with God) by faith … Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness (Ro 3:28 and 4:3). So, what did Abraham believe? He simply believed what (God) had promised, He was also able to perform (Ro 4:21) – even though Gods declaration defied natural law … as Sarahs womb was long dead (Gen 18:9-15 and Ro 4:19). Now, not for his sake only was it written, that (righteousness) was credited to him, but for our sake also, to whom it will be reckoned, as those who believe in Him … (Ro 4:21, 23-24). So, what must one believe so as to gain right standing before the Creator? This is quite simple. One must believe His words. While the Bible is not God (any more than our words are us), these words come from within Him and, as such, are an extension of Him. That is why unbelief repels Him. Thou hast magnified Thy word together with all Thy Name (Ps 138:2). It is easier for the heavens and earth to vanish than for a single stroke of His word to fail (Mt 5:18). Forever, O Lord, Thy word stands in heaven (Ps 119:89). The Horseman (Jesus) in Revelation is called, The Word of God (Rev 19:13). But, … this is just the beginning.God has decided to use His Word to bring us to Himself. In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth … (Ja 1:18). (F)or you have been born again … through the living and abiding word of God (1Pet 1:23). He cleanses us by washing us with the word (Eph 5:26). It is also the tool for Christian growth. (L)ong for the pure milk of the word, in order that you may grow … (1Pet 2:2). Eventually, it is solid food … for the mature (Heb 5:13,14). Gods word is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness (2Cor 3:16). It is living and active – and is compared to a sword, a hammer and fire (Heb 4:12 and Jer 23:29). So, how much of it can one not believe – and still be okay? Our relationship to His Word determines our eternal fate.Jesus once said, whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels (Mk 8:38). But, why any shame? If I believe the Bible is from our eternal Creator – who is incapable of error and never lies – whats the problem? I did not write any of it. This Book was completed almost two thousand years ago. If I decide to represent it – my job is to faithfully and accurately share its contents to interested parties. What parts could possibly make me red-faced before an adulterous and sinful generation? Well, lets start at the beginning of the Book. Is there anything there that might cause me shame? The first three chapters of Genesis detail Creation … and then the Fall. God spoke the heavens and earth into existence (initially from nothing) in six days. Then a Garden is described with the first man (naked), the first woman (naked), and a talking animal. Then a singular event of disobedience is recounted which is declared the genesis of all our troubles – troubles like pain, a harsh environment – you know, the bumps and potholes on lifes road. And this road proceeds to a cliff … over which we all plummet into death. No belief problems yet, right?Jesus and Paul referred to events in that Garden as they make arguments for marriage, divorce, death, sin, the current physical environment, and the role of women (Mt 19:4-12, Ro 5:12-19, 8:20-23, 1Tim 2:9-15). If the Creation/Fall account is symbolic, a myth, or folklore, then their points crumble. Jesus and Paul believed the Genesis account to be … historical. So, why do Systematic Theologians call belief in the historical accuracy of this account, The Naive-Literal View? Why not just, The Literal View? And from whence cometh the Age-Day theory, Progressive Creation theory, and Pictorial Day theory? Why these systems of unbelief toward historical information? Could it be … some are ashamed of a literal adherence to it? Granted, this account does defy natural law, but, come to think of it … Abrahams faith required belief against natural law, too.So, the question remains, how much of the word of God can one not believe … and still be okay? If one is red-faced over the Creation/Fall account – particularly before scientific experts of the various longevity models – well, what about other things? The Bible declares that forty days after rising from the dead, Jesus physically lifted off the ground and went into Heaven. So, … do you believe this nature defying account – but not Genesis? What about Elijah being taken up by a chariot of fire? What about Elisha and the floating iron axe head? What about the sun standing still so Joshua could kill more people? Hundreds of Biblical accounts defy natural law. Do you believe them? Or, do you believe some of them – while being red-faced about others? Here is one way to test yourself, to see if you are in the faith (2Cor 13:5). Go find a scientifically informed, atheistic evolutionist and tell him/her which miraculous Biblical accounts you do believe … and why. As they begin a belly laugh, and fall to the ground in hysterics – what do you feel inside yourself? Embarrassment? Shame? The question remains: How much can one … well, you know the rest of the question.A Couple of PointsFirst, … for any given Biblical declaration, people line up as either a believer or unbeliever. But, it is also clear that God ultimately classifies some as unbelievers – who actually do believe some of the Bible. You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder (Ja 2:19). These people (and all the demons, too) believe accurately on this point … but, are not okay. Many will say to me on (Judgment) Day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name … (Mt 7:21-23). These people even believe Jesus is Lord – and that they had served Him in this life! But, they are not okay. So, even an accurate faith in some of Gods word does not result in righteousness being credited to those believers. So, how much can one not believe ….Second, … there was a time I … was an unbeliever. I wholeheartedly believed in evolution – even taking college courses. Quite honestly, all this Biblical material … was totally irrelevant (I detail much of this elsewhere). So, I know what it means – to not believe. How did this change? Well, once jogged awake, I began digging, digging, digging – weighing, weighing, weighing – and asking, asking, asking. Step by step, issue by issue, objection by objection, God eventually sold me on the validity and accuracy of His claims – despite current natural law. Even now, as I reflect back on this journey, I find it stunning. There was no compelling reason God had to come down to my level, dismantle my contrary beliefs, and then open my mind – so as to unashamedly embrace, and then advocate, His assertions. But, He did so anyway. To say I am indebted to Him does not begin to grasp the reality of my former plight – and rescue.Still, at times along the way, I have struggled with some Biblical declarations. I could not make myself believe them … and I could not pretend to believe them either. But, as unbelief is a mortal threat to my eternal well being, what could I do? Fortunately, God addresses this. After The Transfiguration, Jesus was confronted by a situation the disciples could not handle. A distraught father implored Him, … if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us! Jesus responded, If You can? All things are possible to him who believes. Immediately, the boys father cried out and began saying, I do believe; help me in my unbelief (Mk 9:22-24). This man humbled himself … and the Lord responded positively.I do not know how much one can not believe of the Word of God … and still be okay. But, I do know this; one stands, or falls, based upon ones belief, or unbelief, of it. Are you sure you want to stand before the Author and tell Him the Creation Account is a myth, that axe head never floated, no hand appeared and wrote on a wall ….

US TV host Conan O’Brien rejects NBC’s offer to switch his show’s time slot

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

File:Elizabeth and John Edwards by The Tonight Show.jpg

On Tuesday, United States television personality Conan O’Brien announced in a statement that he will no longer serve as the host for NBC‘s The Tonight Show if the network’s attempt to move his program to the post-midnight time slot comes to fruition.

This move, NBC has said, would be done to accommodate the return of the previous Tonight Show host, Jay Leno, back to late-night from his current prime-time slot.

In a long statement to the media, O’Brien states that NBC has given him a “scant” seven months to establish himself as host of The Tonight Show.

He continues to say that with his show still in “its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.”

O’Brien adamantly declares that “delaying The Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting.”

Citing his view that NBC’s purposed switch of The Tonight Show time slot could lead to the show’s ultimate “destruction,” O’Brien maintains that he would have no other choice than to step down as host—which could also include his possible move to another cable network—if this does in fact happen.

Choosing The Best Trade Show Exhibit

byAlma Abell

Trade shows are the place organizations go to specifically target pertinent purchasers. It is paramount to create an impression at the trade show that will outshine the charm of others. One instrument that can help you shine is a trade show display. Trade show exhibit displays offer a practical approach to sharing your message effectively.

It doesn’t matter what the goal is, a simple trade show exhibit display can accomplish practically anything. Each section of a trade show has two basic objectives: to draw in activity and to pass on a message. With every section vying for consideration, it’s hard to stand out.

These displays come in a variety of different styles, and each one has its advantages. No matter which type you decide to utilize, trade show displays require some thought to assemble a setup that will draw attention. It’s important to look at the different categories to get inspired.

Pop-up Trade Show Exhibits

The pop-up trade show presentation is a real standout among the best displays, and they are also lightweight and easy to manage. A 10-foot display can overlap into one or two cases, each with the span of a substantial golf bag. Pop-up exhibits usually weigh about 70 pounds, and are usually managed by only one individual.

These trade show exhibits are genuinely simple to tend to, but they aren’t very adaptable when it comes to size. Their casings must be completely open to stay stable, so the exhibits are not likely to fit into smaller or wider spaces.

Board Trade Show Exhibits

Board trade show displays are among the most adaptable exhibits. The display consists of separate boards organized in a distinctive pattern. This is a perfect exhibit for those located at exhibition spaces of varying shapes and sizes.

Board trade show displays can hold substantial level pictures, making them adaptable and versatile for a business’ evolving needs. Unfortunately, the displays often require more than one individual to manage. You must consider this when determining which trade show showcase to buy.

Modular Trade Show Exhibits

Measured trade show displays are especially helpful if your spatial needs are sporadic. You might be traveling from exhibition to exhibition, and you aren’t sure how big the space is going to be. In this case, you need a design that is unique to your needs.

If you need get something on a tight budget, this is an excellent choice. You can also add a modular trade show display to a custom presentation for a noteworthy exhibit, which is more affordable than purchasing a complete unit.

If you want your exhibit to stand out at the next trade show, it is imperative that you focus on your needs. You want to leave exhibition-goers with the impression that you are professional – don’t drop the ball.

English court jails policeman over insurance fraud

Thursday, July 1, 2010

A court in England, UK has jailed a policeman for ten months after he was convicted of defrauding his car insurance company.

Police Constable Simon Hood, 43, arranged for a friend who dealt in scrap metal to dispose of his Audi TT, then claimed it had been stolen.

Hood had been disappointed with the car’s value when he tried to sell it two years after its purchase in 2008. He arranged for friend Peter Marsh, 41, to drive the vehicle to his scrapyard in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Marsh then dismantled the vehicle with the intent of disposing of it, but parts were later found wrapped in bubblewrap at Ace Tyre and Exhaust Centre.

Marsh picked up the TT from outside nearby Gorleston police station. Records show mobile phone conversations between the conspirators that day in March, both before and after the vehicle was reported stolen. The pair denied wrongdoing but were convicted of conspiring to commit insurance fraud after trial.

The fraud was uncovered after Hood told former girlfriend Suzanne Coates of the scheme. It was alleged before Norwich Crown Court that he had confessed to her in an effort to resume their relationship. Coates said that after the pseudotheft, Hood told her “he didn’t want to look for it. He said it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, which I thought was a bit strange.”

You knew throughout your career that policemen that get involved in serious dishonesty get sent to prison

Shortly afterwards Hood suggested they should become a couple once more, she said; she challenged his version of events regarding the car: “He said he did it but I couldn’t tell anyone. He said he did it with Peter. Peter had a key and took the car away and it was going to be taken to bits and got rid of so it was never found.”

Hood was defended by Michael Clare and Marsh by Richard Potts. Both lawyers told the court that their clients had already suffered as a result of the action in mitigation before sentencing. Clare said Hood had resigned from the police after fifteen years of otherwise good service and risked losing his pension. “It is not a case where his position as a police officer was used in order to facilitate the fraud,” he pointed out. “His career is in ruins.” Hood is now pursuing a career in plumbing.

Potts defended Marsh by saying that he, too, had already suffered from his actions. His own insurers are refusing to renew their contract with him when it expires and his bank withdrew its overdraft facility. His business employs 21 people and Potts cited Marsh’s sponsorship of Great Yarmouth In Bloom as amongst evidence he supported his local community.

Judge Alasdair Darroch told Marsh that he did accept the man was attempting to help his friend. He sentenced Marsh to six months imprisonment, suspended for two years and ordered to carry out 250 hours of community service. He was more critical of Hood:

“As a police officer you know the highest possible standards are demanded by the public. You have let down the force. You knew throughout your career that policemen that get involved in serious dishonesty get sent to prison.”

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Queen’s Speech sets out Coalition government’s final year agenda

Friday, June 6, 2014File:Queen Elizabeth II delivering 2013 Queen’s Speech.jpg

Queen Elizabeth II formally reopened Parliament on Wednesday and announced the legislative agenda of the UK government for the final year of the Coalition’s five year term. New measures introduced covered crime, the economy, energy and house building.

The next year of legislative changes would, the speech claimed, “deliver on [the government’s] long-term plan to build a stronger economy and a fairer society”. On economics, it promised the government would continue to lower taxes, produce an updated Charter for Budget Responsibility to “ensure that future governments spend taxpayers’ money responsibly”, and continue reduction of the deficit.

On employment law, the Queen’s Speech announced reduction in employment tribunal delays and plans to try and “improve the fairness of contracts for low paid workers” — a response to “zero-hours” contracts. The Institute of Directors support reforms to zero-hours contracts, specifically by removing “exclusivity” clauses. The speech also announced the introduction of a “collective pension” system similar to schemes in use in the Netherlands.

The government is also to increase penalties on companies that do not pay employees minimum wage, and reform National Insurance contributions by self-employed people. The government also plans to extend the ISA and Premium Bond savings schemes and abolish the 10% tax rate on savings. The speech also promised more house building, and also to introduce legislation to reduce the use of plastic bags.

The speech announced the government would seek to pass a new Serious Crime Bill “to tackle child neglect, disrupt serious organised crime and strengthen powers to seize the proceeds of crime”. Another bill will be introduced to deal with modern slavery and human trafficking and to support victims of these offences. The speech also said the government “will lead efforts to prevent sexual violence in conflict worldwide”.

The Serious Crime Bill would also include an increase in the sentence for those who bring about “cyberattacks which result in loss of life, serious illness or injury or serious damage to national security, or a significant risk thereof”. Under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, these are currently subject to a ten year prison sentence, but the punishment would now risk imprisonment for life. Punishment for cyberattacks that cause “a significant risk of severe economic or environmental damage or social disruption” would increase from the current ten year maximum tariff to fourteen years.

Jim Killock from the Open Rights Group said existing laws already allow effective prosecution of those engaging in cyberattacks.

The speech also announced legislation would be introduced “to provide that where a person acts heroically, responsibly or for the benefit of others, this will be taken into account by the courts”.

Constituents would be able to “recall” an MP who had been found guilty of misconduct under a proposed law that will be debated. The Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith described the current plans as “meaningless” and said voters had been “duped”. The Bill would force a by-election if 10% of voters signed a petition within eight weeks, but only if a Commons committee had decided the MP could be recalled. This latter requirement will make it “impossible to recall anyone” according to Goldsmith.

Business minister Michael Fallon defended the recall proposals: “we have to protect MPs from being recalled by people who just disagree with them[…] What you have to ensure is an MP can’t be hounded out just because people disagree with them back in their constituency.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said he agreed with Goldsmith the bill was not perfect, and he wanted “a radical California-style recall” system, but he had settled for a “modest” bill to satisfy “Conservative Party resistance”. Goldsmith claimed Clegg had been “the architect of the current Recall Bill”.

Tim Aker, head of policy for the UK Independence Party, said: “The decision to only offer recall voting on a signed-off-by-Parliament-basis reflects a political class that does not know, does not trust and certainly does not represent its people.”

The speech included measures to make it easier for businesses to engage in hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) of shale gas. The Institute of Directors said laws “must be updated if the UK is to enjoy the benefits of our shale potential”, specifically by scrapping laws on trespass to allow the gas extraction to occur. The British Chamber of Commerce also support such a reform: “While fracking may be unpalatable to some, it is absolutely essential, and business will support legislative measures to exploit Britain’s shale gas deposits”. Activists from Greenpeace fenced off Prime Minister David Cameron’s home in Oxfordshire with a sign reading “We apologise for any inconvenience while we frack under your home”, and delivered a £50 cheque — identified as the maximum compensation suggested for property owners.

Simon Clydedale from Greenpeace UK said of the fracking proposals: “The prime minister is about to auction off over half of Britain to the frackers, including national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty like the Cotswolds. Fracking won’t deliver energy on a meaningful scale for years, if ever, by which time we’ll need to have moved away from dirty fossil fuels and towards high-tech clean power if we’re to head off dangerous climate change.”

Caroline Lucas, Green Party MP, spoke in opposition to the fracking proposals after the Queen’s Speech: “Not only does this bill defy public opinion, it denies people a voice. To allow fracking companies to drill under people’s homes and land without their permission is to ignore public interest in pursuit of the vested interests of a few.” A poll conducted by YouGov found 74% of respondents opposed the plans.

Following the Queen’s Speech, politicians from all parties debated the direction of the government in the year ahead.

Prime Minister David Cameron said that the Queen’s Speech showcased “a packed programme of a busy and radical government”, whose “long-term economic plan is working but there is much, much more to do”, and it would “take the rest of this Parliament and the next to finish the task of turning our country around”.

Labour leader Ed Miliband said: “We would have a Queen’s Speech with legislation which would make work pay, reform our banks, freeze energy bills and build homes again in Britain. A Queen’s Speech which signals a new direction for Britain, not one which offers more of the same.”

Cameron described Miliband as having a “rag bag, pick-and-mix selection of statist Seventies ideas [… a] revival of Michael Foot’s policies paid for by Len McCluskey’s money” — a reference to controversies surrounding the substantial funding Labour gets from trade union Unite.

Liberal Democrat president Tim Farron said of the Queen’s Speech: “I suspect the pensions proposals will be around for a generation or more and will be remembered. It’s about making sure they are fairer, cheaper, more secure, more reliable and potentially better for people.”

Plaid Cymru MP Elfyn Llwyd said: “This was an uninspired Queen’s Speech delivered by a government that has well and truly run out of steam.”

Angus Robertson, the leader of the Scottish National Party in Westminster, said the Queen’s Speech barely mentioned Scotland: “The absence of any mention at all of the Westminster parties’ plans for Scotland in the Queen’s Speech is extraordinary. […] In this – the year of the biggest opportunity in Scotland’s history – Scotland hardly even gets a nod at Westminster, and not a single mention of future plans for improving government in Scotland.”

The speech made brief mention of Scotland: “My government will continue to implement new financial powers for the Scottish Parliament and make the case for Scotland to remain a part of the United Kingdom.”

Harper promised a significant increase in military presence in the Canadian region, which has had notable soveriegnty disputes with the United States, Russia, Denmark and Norway.”You don’t defend national sovereignty with flags,” Harper said. “You need forces on the ground, ships in the sea, and proper surveillance.”

Among other promises, Harper stated he would station three armed naval heavy ice breakers in the area of Iqaluit with 500 regular force personnel, recruit 500 more Canadian rangers, and build a new army training center in the area of Cambridge Bay on the Northwest Passage.File:Stephen Harper voa.jpg

“As prime minister, I will make it clear to foreign governments — including the United States — that naval vessels traveling in Canadian territorial waters will require the consent of the government of Canada,” Harper stated.

The Conservative Party Website states this ““Canada First” Northern Strategy will increase surveillance, navy, army and air force presence”.

The Liberal Party of Canada, the Conservatives’ most powerful rival in the election, quickly posted a rebuttal on their website. They claim Stephen Harpers stated defense budget of $5.3(CAD) billion over 5 years is not enough to afford the two polar icebreakers, which the Liberal party claims will cost $3(CAD) billion with the party estimating an upkeep of $150(CAD) million per year. “Where does Mr. Harper plan to find another $1 billion?” the party asked in their rebuttal.

The Arctic may be an important issue in the future for Canadians, as scientists expect the fabled Northwest Passage of the Arctic to open up for year round shipping by 2050 as a result of global warming. According to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, trade routes from Europe to the Far East could save 4000 km through the passage, as compared to the current routes through the Panama Canal.

Canada last flexed its muscle in the Arctic in 2004 in its most massive Arctic exercise ever, with six hundred personnel from the three services (army, air force, navy) involved in a large exercise in the Baffin Islands.

Canadians are scheduled to go to the polls on January 23, 2006 in an early election as a result of a non-confidence motion in parliament against the former ruling Liberal party.
